Practicing Therapy Remotely

I never imagined working with clients over the Internet. The pandemic, of course, changed the world and how we deliver healthcare, and it also helped me realize the incredible value of online therapy.

I quickly fell in love with online therapy. I saw first hand how much easier it was for clients to fit therapy into their busy lives. It also enhanced my life by allowing me to stay close to my dog, and it gave me more time to spend with my partner during the week. In my experience with online therapy, distance has not detracted from the bond that is created between me and my clients or the progress that we've made together.

There are some amusing surprises that accompany online therapy like realizing someone is a lot taller or shorter than you imagined or watching a client's cat get cozy on the keyboard in front of them in session. There's some challenges too, like when a connection gets a bit spotty. But all things considered, you can't beat the convenience factor. I am all for simplifying because life is already complicated enough!

I was not surprised that most folks preferred to stick with our video or phone meetings. It has all the benefits of in-person therapy but you can have your session wherever you're most comfortable. I eventually decided to make the transition to practicing totally remote, and it's been so rewarding.

Of course, there will be clinicians and clients that prefer in-person visits, and that's great! For others, including myself, online therapy saves precious time to channel back into our families, friends, and hobbies.
